Port of Riesa
The Port of Riesa is a port on the River Elbe to the north of the district town of Riesa. It is operated by Sächsische Binnenhäfen Oberelbe GmbH.
A container terminal is to be built at a cost of 35 million euros: the Port of Riesa on the north bank of the Elbe is to be closed, whilst a new terminal is to be built on the south quay.
History
On the basis of a government bill, the First Chamber of the Saxon State Parliament decided in January 1886 to build an industrial and railway port in Riesa, which commenced operations on 3 September 1888.
In the early 1960s, the Port of Riesa was the second-largest inland port in the German Democratic Republic.
