Schwarzenberg Castle is a castle near Scheinfeld in the Franconian Steigerwald. The architectural origin of the castle was a medieval fortification, which was later converted into a representative castle. The origin of the castle is still clearly visible: Fortified ramparts, casemates and fortified towers still bear witness to its former purpose. The decorated palace of the castle also stands in clear contrast to the other architecture.
History
In 1150, the first documented mention of a castle complex, which was owned by the Counts of Castell, took place. This assumption is not uncontroversial, however, as the document may also refer to Schwarzenburg Castle near Waldmünchen. On the other hand, the existence of a noble-free family from 1215-1235, which ended with a sick canon in Würzburg in 1250, is secured. A little later, the castle appears for the first time in the Castell deed of inheritance around 1258/1265; the tower is mentioned in 1274.
