Stauf Castle

The Stauf Castle Ruins are the ruins of a hilltop castle in the Upper Austrian municipality of Haibach ob der Donau in the Eferding district. The medieval complex was probably founded in the 12th century by Wernhard de Stove, an ancestor of the Counts of Schaunberg, and developed from a center of power for the high nobility into an administrative seat, which was taken over by various stewards. The castle was built as a family seat before the Schaunbergs moved their headquarters to Schaunberg Castle, so that Stauf became only a subsidiary castle of the family from then on.

El castillo fue documentado por primera vez en 1125. En aquella época, la zona pertenecía al Ducado de Baviera, y los obispos de Passau actuaban como señores feudales. Un tal Wernhard de Stove, miembro de la familia Julbach (Baviera), vivió aquí, pero pronto fundó una nueva sede ancestral, el vecino Castillo de Schaunberg. En esta época, la vecina Ostarrichi estaba gobernada por el Margrave Leopoldo III, el canonizado Leopoldo, quien también fue el único santo patrón de la Alta Austria durante mucho tiempo (el Día de Leopoldo, el 15 de noviembre).
