Descripción:Hay Point is a small town located approximately 40 kilometres south of the city of Mackay, Queensland, Australia. It is made up of two bulk coal terminals, Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal, owned by Prime Infrastructure Holdings (formerly Babcock & Brown Infrastructure) and Brookfield Asset Management, and Hay Point Services Coal Terminal, owned and operated by a joint venture between BHP Billiton and Mitsubishi. At the 2006 census, Hay Point and the surrounding area had a population of 1,386.[1]

In 2003/4, 77 million tonnes of coal was exported through the two terminals. This makes Hay Point one of the largest coal ports in the world.

Aussie port development reaches astounding levels

The level of port development underway or planned in Australia is astounding. Major coal port expansions are in progress at Newcastle, Hay Point/Dalrymple Bay, Gladstone and Abbot Point and at least two new coal ports are in contemplation in Queensland.

Iron ore miners, driven by demand from China and India in particular, are behind developments in Darwin (Northern Territory), Port Latta (Tasmania), Whyalla, Port Lincoln and Port Bonython (South Australia) and Geraldton, Port Hedland, Dampier, Cape Lambert and Cape Preston in Western Australia - as well as brand new ports such as WA's Oakajee.

Work on many of these developments began before the global financial crises and backers are unwilling or unable to slow the momentum.

The Port of Hay Point is one of the world's largest coal export ports and is comprised of two separate coal export terminals, Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal and the Hay Point Services Coal Terminal (owned and operated by BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance).
