Descripción:Pomeranian Dukes’ Castle is located on a hill, near the Odra River, in north-eastern part of the old city. The oldest relics of the ducal seat date back to the mid-fourteenth century. In 1346, Duke Barnim III started construction of brick Stone House and St. Otto Church.
In 1491, Duke Boguslaw X on the occasion of his wedding with Princess Anna the Jagiellonian, daughter of Polish king Casimir the Jagiellonian raised another southern wing. In the years 1575-1577, during the reign of Duke John Frederick and his wife Princess Erdmute von Hohenzollern, the castle was greatly rebuilt and expanded, according to Wilhelm Zacharias design. During that time, the castle became a magnificent Renaissance residence with a courtyard surrounded by cloisters. In 1616, Duke Philip II began to build the fifth, museum wing. At that time the second courtyard, originally called the Crane’s, later the Mint’s was formed. After the death of Philip II the construction was completed in 1619 by Duke Francis I. The ground floor was allocated to coach house and armoury. The floors included library, duke’s study and art collection. In 1637, after the death of the last Pomeranian duke, Boguslaw XIV, Szczecin was under Swedish rule. In 1711, the castle was a short-term refuge to the exiled Polish king Stanislaw Leszczynski and his family. In 1720, Szczecin was incorporated into the Prussian state and the castle was used as the seat of government agencies.
On August 17th, 1944, as a result of an allied bombing raid the castle burnt down. Roofs, ceilings and floors collapsed, and the equipment was destroyed. The reconstruction was started in 1958 and completed in 1984. At that time the castle was restored to the appearance from the period of greatest prosperity in the days of Duke John Frederick. To reconstruct the original appearance of the buildings the following were used: Mateusz Merian engraving of 1652, Swedish artist John Joachim Zeuner’s drawings of 1673 and a view of the castle from the Ludwik Most’s painting of 1840s. The castle now houses the cultural institution known as the “Castle of Pomeranian Dukes” that is organizing exhibitions, outdoor shows, symposiums and concerts. History of the castle and its inhabitants is presented on three permanent exhibitions: “In the court of the Pomeranian dukes” in the Duke George I chambers, “Pompa funebris of the Griffin dynasty dukes” with six Renaissance tombs and “The history of ducal seat in Szczecin” – in the Castle Museum.

The Ducal Castle in Szczecin, Poland, was the seat of the dukes of Pomerania-Stettin of the House of Pomerania (Griffins), who ruled the Duchy of Pomerania from 1121 to 1637.
History
Barnim the Great of Pomerania-Stettin erected the castle within Szczecin's walls against the will of the burghers in 1346. An older Pomeranian burgh had been leveled in 1249.[1] In 1490 the castle was partially reconstructed for Bogusław X's wedding with Anna Jagiellonka (daughter of king Casimir IV Jagiellon).
Between 1573−1582 the castle was rebuilt again, this time in the mannerist style for duke John Frederick by Italian stonemasons according to design by Wilhelm Zachariasz Italus. Two new wings were added to close the courtyard before the medieval southern and eastern wings. The main gate was adorned with ducal crest, the eastern wing was enhanced and the northern wing was intended for chapel.
In 1648, due to the tenets of the Peace of Westphalia, the castle become a seat of Swedish governor.[5] Before 1705 another reconstruction occurred to prepare the castle for Queen of Poland - Catherine Opalińska, who lived here with her daughters Anna and Marie Leszczyńska (future Queen of France) and a small court between 1705-1711.[5] In 1711 king Stanisław I Leszczyński, who sought refuge before chasing him Saxon and Russian forces, joined his wife and daughters at the castle.
