Descripción:Dattatreya Temple and 85 ft Hanuman Murti in Carapichaima

West Indies

One of the more famous religious sites in Trinidad is the 85-foot-high Hanuman murthi — the largest outside India it’s claimed, and the architectural designs of the pinkish/saffron (Kesari) colored Dattatreya Mandir at Orange Field Road, Carapichaima.

Now in Trinidad, you would assume that if there is a sign off the highway at the Carlsen Field flyover, you would expect that there would be tons of signage directing you over to the temple. However, because this is Trinidad, there is actually no easy way to find the temple. Once you get off the Old Southern Main Rd, it is fairly easy to ask anyone walking along the side of the road for directions to the temple. It’s definitely worth the drive in.

The structure was built according to the Dravidian style of architecture of South India.

The inside of the dome has seven stages of graded architecture, with numerous figures of musicians playing the various types of musical instruments in seven different colors. This is symbolic of inviting a guest into the main hall of the big mandir.

The murti of Lord Hanuman is one of the tallest statues in the Caribbean.

Trinidad's Giant Hanuman

TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO, June 9, 2003: It's a most beautiful site to behold, say visitors nearing the Mandir. One passerby described it as "like visiting India itself" while foreigners who came in four maxi-taxis yesterday marveled at its beauty and serenity.

They were all eyeing the magnificent 85-foot-high Hanuman murthi - the largest outside India it's claimed, and the exquisite architectural designs of the pinkish/saffron (Kesari) colored Dattatreya Mandir at Orange Field Road, Carapichaima. Bala Swamiji, who has been living at the ashram for almost two decades, said the structure was built according to the Dravidian style of architecture of South India.

Two gray concrete elephants provide water for devotees to wash their feet before entering the main mandir at the northern side. After passing the elephants, one enters the dome. The inside of the dome has seven stages of graded architecture, with numerous figures of musicians playing the various types of musical instruments in seven different colors. This is symbolic of inviting a guest into the main hall of the big mandir.

The color schemes are the same as in India, Swamiji said. The same architectural style is evident inside the mandir dedicated to Lord Dattatreya. Inside the main mandir there are several smaller ones dedicated especially to Lord Dattatreya, Lord Siva and to the Mother Goddess. Subramaniyam Sthapati is on site sthapati (supervising architect) and twenty silpis (masons) were brought from India to do the artwork on the mandir and to build the Hanuman murthi, which took two years to complete.

"We plan to have a primary and secondary school on site, a play park and garden with a beautiful landscape to bring peace to all who visit," Swamiji said.

Carapichaima is a town in central Trinidad. Nearby communities and villages include Orange Field Village, Waterloo, Brickfield Village and Korea Village.

Name

The name Carapichaima is said to be derived from the native Amerindian inhabitants who no longer exist in this area.

History

Carapichaima had been a sugar producing village that expanded after the railroad opened up central Trinidad to development and population movements. Better access to transportation allowed the village to expand into a hub for transportation in central Trinidad and center for commerce for the surrounding areas and rural communities.

Carapichaima has seen major changes and growth due to a number of factors. These include the construction of new schools in the area, the establishment and expansion of business into the area and the increase in tourism into the area.

Major structural changes occurred in the past few years when the main sugar producing, state owned company, Caroni 1975 Ltd., was closed.[when?] A significant part of the rural population were employed in the sugar industry. Among some of the major problems plaguing this community is increasing crime rates and difficulty coping with the previously mentioned structural changes.
