VIVEKANANDA Y THIRUVALLUVAR

El distrito de Kanyakumary es el más sureño de la India. En él se encuentra el cabo más meridional del pais, el Cabo Comorin, un lugar asombroso donde confluyen dos mares y un océano.

Una región de gran belleza natural y donde el color azul de los mares se mezcla con el verde de las montañas del Ghats en el interior.

Allí, en la confluencia del Mar de Bengala, el Mar Arábigo y el Océano Indico, se encuentran dos pequeños islotes, donde los indues han querido alzar su particular estatua de la libertad.

En los dos islotes se encuentran dos pequeñas joyas poco conocidas pero impresionantes, tanto por su belleza como por el lugar en el que se encuentran: El Templo de Vivekananda y la Estatua de Thiruvalluvar.

Swami Vivekananda fue un místico hindú del siglo XIX, el primero que viajó a Estados Unidos, donde realizó numerosas conferencias y seminarios y convirtiéndose en el introductor del Yoga y el Vedanta en America e Inglaterra.

El 04 de Julio de 1902 mientras realizaba una sesión de meditación falleció con tan sólo 39 años. Los doctores le declararon una apoplejía, sin embargo los monjes estaban convencidos que se fue para alcanzar el mahasamadhi, el último trance y estado de superconsciencia.

A su memoria se levantó esta construcción en una de las dos islas del Cabo Comorin.

En el otro islote y junto al Memorial a Vivekananda se encuentra la impresionante estatua dedicada a Thiruvalluvar, un antiguo poeta hindú de la casta de los Tamil, cuya obra más célebre es el Tirukkural, un compendio de 1330 aforismos respecto a la vida y el trabajo.

No se sabe a ciencia cierta la época exacta en la que vivió Thiruvalluvar. Su famosa obra se data dentro de un amplio periodo que podría ir desde el siglo II a.C. y el siglo VIII d.C.

La imponente estatua a Thiruvalluvar se comenzó a construir el 06 de Septiembre de 1990 y a su cabeza se encontaba el arquitecto hindú Ganapati Sthapati, que ya había construido varios templos en la misma región.

Tras unos años de estancamiento, la imagen gigante se terminó el 01 de Enero del año 2000, con un total de 3681 bloques de piedra, con una media de entre 3 y 8 toneladas de peso cada uno y donde el más pesado fue de unas 15 toneladas.

La estatua tiene una altura total de 40,5 metros, divididos entre los 11,5 metros de su pedestal que representan los 38 capítulos de la virtud del Thirukkural, y los 29 metros de la estatua de Thiruvalluvar.

En total, la estatua pesa más de 7.000 toneladas.

Otro de los atractivos principales de Kanyakumari son las llamadas “Twin Rocks” (rocas gemelas), que vienen a ser dos islotes de piedra, ubicados a unos doscientos metros de la orilla más céntrica.

En el islote más pequeño, se encuentra la estatua de Thiruvalluvar, un famoso santo y poeta tamil de la antigüedad. La estatua fue terminada en el año 2000 y mide cuarenta metros de alto.

En el islote mayor, también conocido como “La Roca de Vivekananda”, hay dos recintos: el “Memorial de Vivekananda” (del cual hablaré en detalle en un futuro post) y el “Sri Pada Mandapam”. La construcción de estas dos salas data de los años 70’ y es la postal más icónica del pueblo.

Justamente desde la orilla principal, punto de encuentro masivo, se tiene una vista perfecta de los dos monumentos. Una vez que cayó la tarde, y por fin algo de frescor aliviaba nuestros cuerpos occidentales, nos dirigimos a dicho epicentro, en busca de la perspectiva de las postales.

Tanto los turistas como los vendedores estaban en su apogeo; las gafas de sol “Armani” a cien rupias, los cocos frescos, los puestos de castañas de cajú (anacardos), las chucherías de luces de colores…

The Thiruvalluvar Statue is a 133 feet (40.6 m) tall stone sculpture of the Tamil poet and saint Tiruvalluvar, author of the Thirukkural. It was opened on January 1, 2000 (Millennium) and is located atop a small island near the town of Kanyakumari, where two seas and an ocean meet; the Bay of Bengal, the Arabian Sea, and the Indian Ocean . The statue has a height of 95 feet (29 m) and stands upon a 38 foot (11.5 m) pedestal that represents the 38 chapters of "virtue" in the Thirukkural. The statue standing on the pedestal represents "wealth" and "pleasures", signifying that wealth and love be earned and enjoyed on the foundation of solid virtue.[1]

The combined height of the statue and pedestal is 133 feet (40.5 m), denoting the 133 chapters in the Thirukkural. It has a total weight of 7000 tons.[2][3]

The statue, with its slight bend around the waist is reminiscent of a dancing pose of the ancient Indian deities like Nataraja. It was sculpted by the Indian sculptor Dr. V. Ganapati Sthapati, who also created the Iraivan Temple.

This monument was hit by the Indian Ocean Tsunami of December 26, 2004.[1]

Yes to rise a statue for Thiruvalluvar in Kanyakumari, the southern tip of the mainland at the confluence of the three seas befitting the stature of this Saint-poet. The statue that was dedicated at the dawn of the new millennium, stands out as a beacon of light to guide human life for ever.

Measures adopted for the statue of Thiruvalluvar :

The statue with 95' and the pedestial supporting it with 38ft, the structure is thus a standing mammoth commanding a total height of 133 feet. An artistic peripheral wall around the statue, thereby forms a captivating mandap.

The measures what they stands for? :

The pedestal represents the 38 chapters on 'Virtue' and the 95' statue standing on the pedestal represents 'Wealth' and 'Pleasure' signifying that Wealth and Love be earned and enjoyed on the foundation of Virtue solid.
