Operated by T.R. General Directorate of State Railways (TCDD), the seaport is located at 38° 25' 00" N, 27° 04' 30" E coordinates.

Seaport Characteristics: İzmir Port is the biggest seaport of Aegean Region in regards to its annual ship acceptance capacity. With its central location between West Europe and North Africa and strong hinterland, it is not only the agricultural and commercial centre of Aegean Region but it also plays a very significant role for Turkish export products.

As the foremost export seaport of Turkey in container handling, İzmir Port is an important trade port between, European, Middle East and Asian countries with its railroad and highway connections, along with being the import gate of Central Anatolia and Aegean Regions of Turkey. Within the context of the National Port Study Master Plan prepared by JICA – Japan International Cooperation Agency, it has been mentioned that İzmir Port may become a main container port.

Considering its location allowing easy access to all touristic assets of Aegean Region and close proximity of 25 km to Adnan Menderes Airport, the importance of the port for passenger services may also be emphasised.

Location: İzmir is located at the western edge of Aegean Sea, and the third biggest city and commercial centre of Turkey for its population density. The port has a wide agricultural and industrial hinterland. Aside from being the agriculture and industry port of Aegean Region, İzmir also plays a crucial role regarding the export activities of the country. All types of cargo are serviced in the port and port expansion works are underway. The seaport is connected to the railway and highway networks.

Pilotage/Towage: It is mandatory for ships entering and exiting the port. Pilotage and Towage services are provided 24 hours a day by TDİ (Turkey Maritime Organisation).

Marine Vehicles: A 90-tonnes capacity floating crane and 1 mooring (warp) boat exist.

Handling Equipments: Container handling operations in the terminal are realised by 5 40-tonnes gantry cranes, 19 40-tonnes rubber-wheeled transtainers, 20 25-42-tonnes full and 20 8-10-tonnes empty container forklifts. In addition to these, there are 7 3-25-tonnes dock cranes, 12 5-25-tonnes mobile cranes, and 20 short-mast forklifts. Also the terminal has suitable reefer panels for reefer containers. The daily capacity of the container washing plant is 20 TEU.

3. Personal Handling Equipments: 2 100-tonnes MHC.

Bulk Cargo Plant: In the port that has two concrete silos with a total capacity of 70,000 tonnes belonging to TMO, there is also a conveyor system connected to the dock.

Passenger Services: Due to the close proximity of İzmir to the historical and touristic sites in Aegean Region, the port passenger terminal also has a significant traffic.

As may be seen in Table 1 and Table 2, approximately half of the loadings done in ports operated by TCDD and 60% of the container traffic occur in İzmir Port. Another important point is that the loading amounts are higher than unloading amounts in no seaport other than İzmir Port. This situation highlights the importance of İzmir port as a export port.
