El viajero que viaja a Tailandia no puede irse sin visitar una de sus joyas: Phuket. Esta isla-provincia es un santuario inmerso en una gran selva donde la naturaleza nos invita a disfrutar de su naturaleza. Un entorno único que deja claro por qué se hace llamar El Edén, la Perla del Sur de Tailandia.

Phuket es uno de esos lugares en la lista de “Destinos que visitar al menos una vez en la vida”. Y es que la belleza de sus montañas y de sus preciosas playas son importantes razones que le permiten recibir a más de 3 millones de visitantes cada año.

La montañosa isla de Phuket nos obsequia con unas excelentes vistas, las que nos incitan a convertirnos en pintores sólo por retratar las grandes extensiones de tierra que descansan a nuestros pies, llenas de exuberancia tropical. Y, lo mejor de todo, es que para contemplarlas no hace falta caminar todo un día entero sino que para disfrutar de una vista de 360 grados de todo el sur de la isla sólo hace falta desplazarnos algunos minutos.

Por ejemplo, el mirador más alto de la isla, es accesible desde el este, a través de una bucólica carretera que serpentea a través de aldeas y plantaciones de caucho. Desde la parte superior de la cocina, podemos obtener una excelente vista de las nubes y de la mitad de Phuket de este a oeste.

La religión budista, sus muestras arquitectónicas y ornamentales también están reflejadas en Phuket. De hecho, podemos visitar una de sus mayores atracciones: el Gran Buddha, uno de los monumentos más importantes y venerados de la isla. La gran imagen de Buddha se en encuentra en la parte superior de las colinas de Nakkerd, entre Chalong y Kata, y con sus 45 metros de altura, se puede ver perfectamente desde lejos.

Junto al Buddha. La paz y la espiritualidad se respiran por todos los poros de la piel de sus visitantes. Los únicos ruidos que escuchamos son el tintineo de las campanillas y las banderas amarillas (símbolo budista) ondeando al viento. De fondo, una suave música.

Todo el cuerpo del gran Buddha está revestido de mármol blanco, un hermoso material que brilla bajo la luz del sol y que para los tailandeses también es símbolo de esperanza. Desde aquí arriba, las vistas de la isla también son impresionantes.

Cerca de la base del Gran Buda, hay una sala que muestra la historia del proyecto, algunas de las enseñanzas budistas y las cajas con innumerables donaciones.

Phuket Big Buddha

Phuket Big Buddha, a 45 meter tall marble statue, is visible from anywhere in the southern part of Phuket. It might not bemy favourite attraction, but the views from up there are breathtaking.

When arriving you will find a large parking and a road to a large construction where people can donate, buy amulets and where occasional ceremonies are held. This place also serves as a museum narrating the history of the construction. You'll have to walk through this building to access the stairs climbing to the Big Buddha. Once there you'll find out that a wide angle lens would have been a good idea, but since you are reading this, you'll have yours. The top of the hill is not that wide and the Buddha is really massive, so it is not easy to capture it in its entirety. Mostly built on people's donation in 2004, Phuket Big Buddha is 45 meter high and made of white marble. Next to it is a smaller golden Buddha actually made of brass.

From up there you will get some pretty stunning bird view on three large bays. Before that day, I always thought they were far from each other. Directly in front of the Big Buddha is Chalong Bay and when sky is clear, you will see all the way to Phang Nga Bay. Few steps to the west, another short staircase will take you to a terrace from which you'll get a nice view on Kata Bay and Kata Noi Bay. You might even recognize Promthep cape and even Nai Harn Windmill. The best spot to see the third bay is actually to stop at the restaurant on the way up. You'll get from there a very good panorama of Karon Bay and its giant resorts.

Why does it feel like a tourist attraction? Too many massive signs all the way to the Sarasin bridge some 50 km away and too many signs pointing at the site when closing up... where is the humility and the feeling of inner peace? Forget any possible reflection on the beauty of the site, the background soundtracks is way to loud, so altogether: the attraction is too obvious. Koh Samui always had a very popular Giant Buddha and it feels like Phuket wanted to have it bigger.

Phuket Big Buddha is an unavoidable site to visit, but it left me uneasy... The sitting Buddha of Wat Kao Rang or the reclining Buddha of Wat Srisoonthron are more humble.
