Descripción:The Daxiang Giant Buddha (Daxiang dafo), part of a cliff on the Giant Statue Mountain (Daxiangshan), stands three kilometers from the main tourists sights of Gangu county. The statue itself, a representation of the Buddha Sakyamuni, is 23 km in height, and is well detailed.

According to both historical records and the relics that have been excavated here and around this region, the Buddha was built in the Northern Wei dynasty, some 1,500 years ago. Many of the features of the Buddha are in the style of the Tang dynasty, however, and it has been suggested that it took sculptors over three centuries, and four dynasties, to complete the making of this cultural treasure. To get to Gangu, you should take the bus from Tianshui, in front of the square, at any time between 8-9 am. The journey will take between one and one and a half hours and costs between RMB 10-15. The attraction can be reached on foot along a path leading up from Gangu town in about an hour. You should pay RMB 5 for a ticket.

Daxiang Mountain, also called Wenqi, is a steep mountain in Gangu county. It is 2.5 kilometers from the town. When you look at the mountain from the front, it looks like a flag. When you look at it sideways, the mountain looks like a dragon. On the mountain, junipers and pines grow in wanton profusion. Pavilions, platforms, chambers and towers nestle at the foot, and encircling trees hide carved beams and painted rafters. On the cliff of the mountain is a big cave grotto in which sits a giant Buddha.

Although when the giant Buddha grotto was excavated remains a mystery, the giant Buddha in it could be dated back to the Beiwei Dynasty according to related information and relics. After they made a thorough and detailed inspection, specialists of the grotto art of Gansu province said that the giant Buddha was engraved in the climax of the Tang Dynasty. So it is believed that the carving of the Daxiangshan Grottoes spanned 300 years. Carving started in the Beiwei Dynasty and ended at the end of the Tang Dynasty.

The giant Buddha is 23.3 meters high and 10.4 meters wide at its waist. It welcomes tourists with a genial facial expression, but has a solemn appearance, and long ears reaching to the shoulders, a magnificent physical prowess, slanting cassocks, and stubbles like tadpoles, and it sits in a lotus position, serene and calm.

At each side of the giant Buddha was the long corridor that was built like a girdle following the shape of the mountain. 22 huge and marvelous grottoes, square shaped, joined together in the corridor. One special character of the Daxiangshan Grottoes is the large conical arch niche and the chancel at the frontal cliff, as well as Chan grottoes for monks'prapatti. These features are not paralleled in China.

On every 8th day of the fourth month in the lunar calendar, young and old people from nearby villages come to visit Daxiang Mountain and see the temple fair. Lieterary art is exhibited, and there is a market in the temple fair. On Sep.10, 1981, the Daxiangshan Grottoes were listed as a provincial-level cultural relic, and money was allocated for its rehabilitation. In 2001, the grottoes became a national cultural relic.
