After a construction period of two and a half years, von Gerkan, Marg and Partners Architects (gmp) have completed

the Tianjin West Railway Station in China. The new intersection, which is located about 130 kilometers

south-west of Beijing, serves as a stop on the high-speed line between the Chinese capital and Shanghai, as well

as connecting the various regional lines and linking these to the underground network. The local urban design

function of the railway station is to connect a commercial area to the north with the old city center to the south,

bridging tracks, a river and a road in this city of 12 million residents.

The architects have highlighted the bridge function between the city quarters with a 57 meter high and nearly

400 meter long barrel vault roof above the terminal concourse. Its curved roof is reminiscent of a large scale city

gate and the long, stretched out concourse beneath of a classic place of transit. The portals of the eastern and

western sides of the curved hall are symmetrically framed by arcades. To the south of the building a large and

open station forecourt covers a wide area which gives credence to the importance and dimension of this railway

station.

The Tianjinxi Railway Station (Chinese: 天津西站; pinyin: Tiānjīnxī zhàn) is a high-speed railway station in Tianjin, People's Republic of China. It's served by Jinghu Railway and Jinbao Railway and by the Jinghu High-Speed Railway.

Extension Project

In 2008, renovation and expansion works of the station began, in tandem with the construction of the Beijing-Shanghai high speed railway. After the completion of the Beijing-Shanghai High Speed Railway, and in anticipation for services of the Beijing-Tianjin Intercity Railway, Tianjinxi's platforms were increased from 13 to 24. These include 9 high-speed platforms with 17 railway lines. The reconstruction of the station building involved the creation of a new main station building with a larger waiting room, a new North-South underground connection square, baggage check-in points, and facilitated access. The new Tianjinxi station can be reached by bus, Metro (Tianjin Metro Line 1, 4, 6; Lines 4 and 6 currently not in service), taxi, or on foot. Tianjinxi Railway Station will replace the main Tianjin station to become the largest transportation hub of the city of Tianjin. The station was designed by the internationally renowned architectural firm Gerkan, Marg and Partners and was officially opened in summer 2011. The operation is part of a massive urban renovation project of the north area of Tianjin that will bring the station in the centre of a new residential and commercial development.
