Descripción:The name Khor Fakkan translates to ‘Creek of the Two Jaws’ reflecting its setting in a splendid bay flanked on either side by two headlands. This is Sharjah’s largest town on the east coast located midway between Dibba Al Hisn and Fujairah, with the focal point of the economy centred on the expanding container terminal and port. A long stretch of sandy beach backed by a promenade runs alongside the bay and is a pleasant place to wander.
The Oceanic Hotel & Resort ( 9719238 5111) is tucked into one of the headlands with mature gardens, its own large expanse of white-sand beach, water sports, pool and a good diving centre.
Set up in the mountains above the town is the Al Rifaisa Dam – a holding centre to contain floodwater and to serve the settlements below.
Wadi Wurrayah is a popular natural beauty site located some 15 kilometres inland from Khor Fakkan. Accessible by four-wheel drive vehicle, the wadi offers a deep all year round pool with a seasonal waterfall.

Gulftainer continues to focus on the expansion and development of Khorfakkan (KCT) and Sharjah Container Terminal, as vital gateways into the United Arab Emirates - but it has clear ambitions to expand its overseas activity too.
Within this, Turkey is seen as an important target, says commercial manager Keith Nuttall.
"Gulftainer is negotiating to become involved in one or more ports in Turkey, probably in the Marmara region," he says. "Negotiations are continuing at present. We consider Turkey as a major economic force both now and in the future, with huge potential not least in the ports and transport sectors.
"The country is of course at the crossroads of Europe and Asia and will certainly be an important trading and business centre in the years to come - and an ideal environment in which to invest."
Mr Nuttall says discussions are also close to conclusion with a Turkish logistics and transport company.
On home territory, meanwhile, Gulftainer says the phase two development of KCT is scheduled for completion at the end of this year. The multi-million dollar project will increase the terminal's present 1,460 metres of quay by another 440 metres, with a new 800 metre breakwater built to give maximum protection as well as the easiest possible access for 8,000-plus teu ships.
Much of the dredging required to provide 16.5 metres of water depth alongside and in the turning circle is complete, and infilling for the berth's foundation is well under way. Six super post-panamax ship-to-shore cranes will be installed on the new berth.
"KCT continues to set records and is widely considered to be the fastest container port in the world, with regular productivity of over 50 moves per hour per gantry," says Mr Nuttall.
At Sharjah, major dredging operations are in hand to increase the draft to 12.5 metres, and other developments include quay lengthening, additional stacking areas, new cranes and more equipment.
Volumes at KCT and SCT combined were up 8% last year to 2.1m teu. Gulftainer's overseas activities have so far taken it to Kuwait, Comoros, Pakistan and India.

The latest figures produced by the respected transport and shipping analysts Dynaliners (Dynamar BV in the Netherlands), reveal that Gulftainer's Sharjah Container Terminals (in particular the flagship Khorfakkan) have moved dramatically up the list of major terminal operators for volumes handled in 2009.
Almost uniquely, in what was for the industry in general a very challenging year, Gulftainer's volumes actually rose substantially and now, with a total of 2.75 M teu throughput, Sharjah/ Khorfakkan has risen to position number 39 in the 'league table' of major worldwide terminals.
Gulftainer Group Managing Director Peter Richards commented, "Knowing that 2009 was going to be a particularly difficult time for the industry, we worked even harder at delivering the best levels of performance to our shipping line customers at a time when they really needed assistance. Our efforts were supported by their faith in us, as they moved more containers via Khorfakkan, in particular, to the surrounding region - for which our terminal is the optimum gateway.
Also, thanks to the foresight of the Sharjah Government, our facilities have continued to be upgraded - in good times and bad - to cater to our customers' current and future needs. For example, in 2009 Khorfakkan opened another 430 metres of quay and received six new shore gantries, all of which helps us to offer our customers an ever more efficient service." Richards added, "We continue to be optimistic about the region and have based our strategies on continued growth."
It is particularly pleasing that this performance in 2009 is being replicated in 2010 with, at the time of writing, Gulftainer's Sharjah (KCT & SCT) Terminals showing an increase of nearly 24% on the period to end May, compared with the same five months in 2009.The company is confidently expecting total volumes to exceed 3 million teu for the full year in 2010.

Durante el amarre, varias grúas trabajan en un mismo buque para agilizar la descarga. Cuando las grúas se desplazan lateralmente para cambiar de posición con respecto a las pilas de contenedores, suelen situarse muy próximas entre sí. Además, para llegar a todas las pilas, deben desplazar la pluma a corta distancia de las superestructuras del buque, como antenas, sistemas de radar, estructuras en cubierta, etc. Para evitar colisiones entre la pluma y el buque, se han instalado sensores en la primera con el fin de avisar en caso de peligro o detener el movimiento de la grúa si fuera necesario. La fiabilidad es un requisito esencial para estos sistemas anticolisión debido a las difíciles condiciones ambientales y las exigencias de esta labor.
