JNPT, situated in Navi Mumbai, is the biggest container handling Port in India, handling around 60 per cent of the country's containerized cargo.

The port has set for itself a long term goal of achieving 10 million twenty foot equivalent units (TEU's) by the year 2014-15.

JNP boasts of a full fledged Customs House, 23 Contanier Freight Stations and a large number of inland container depots spread across the country.

JNPT will soon invite bids to build a fourth terminal on its premises with a capacity to handle 4.8 million tonnes of container every year. This, after a consortium led by PSA International backed out after failing to sign the contract.

Both the ports are well connected to the other parts of the state and the country by rail and road network.

Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust likely to invite fresh bids for 4th terminal

Posted on July 30, 2012 by admin

Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), India’s largest container port, is likely to invite fresh bids for its fourth container terminal facility after a consortium led by Port of Singapore Authority (PSA) and ABG Infra failed to sign the deal almost a year since the bids were opened.

According to senior trustees of the board at JNPT, the consortium has not signed a clause with the port, which could have forced PSA-ABG to confirm their willingness to take up the project.

“In the absence of a clause which expresses their willingness to take up the project and now, if ABG does not sign the contract, then the only option is to go for rebid. By now, the port should have signed an agreement for the fifth container terminal, but the fourth container terminal has not seen the light of day. We will ask the chairman to take a suitable decision in the board meeting next month,” said a JNPT trustee.

In September, the consortium led by PSA and ABG had quoted the highest revenue share of 51% to the port after the bids were opened.

The revenue share quoted by PSA was the highest ever, since the government allowed private companies to operate terminals at ports in the country.

“We have sought the opinion of the shipping ministry and they have written to the ministry of law and the economic affairs wing of the finance ministry seeking their opinion regarding ABG’s plan to withdraw from the consortium ,” L Radhakrishnan, chairman, JNPT told ET.

Meanwhile, officials in the ministry of shipping said the matter is still being considered by the law ministry and the economic affairs wing of finance ministry and a suitable decision can be taken only after the shipping ministry studies the opinions given by the other ministries.

In January this year, the signing of the licence agreement for building the Rs 6,700-crore container terminal was deferred after the consortium said it was not willing to bear the stamp duty, amounting to Rs 50 crore, for registering the document.

Later in March, ABG expressed its plan to move out, largely because ABG, as the consortium partner, will have to invest close to Rs 1,000 crore for the project, forcing another round of legal battle.

The fourth terminal will have a capacity of 4.8 million standard container capacity and a berth of 2 km in length and can accommodate seven ships at a time, compared with twothree at the other terminals.

India’s major ports see box volumes rise 3.3 percent

13 Mar 2012 -

Country's ports handled 7.09 million TEU during first 11 months of 2011-12 fiscal year

India’s major ports saw year-on-year container volumes rise 3.3 percent during the first 11 months of the 2011-12 fiscal year, according to preliminary figures published by the Indian Ports Association (IPA).

Container volumes increased from 6.87 million TEU to 7.09 million TEU during the 11-month period, while total tonnage rose 6.72 percent to 109.5 million tonnes, over the same period the year prior.

Jawaharlal Nehru (Nhava Sheva), India’s largest deepwater container port, saw year-on-year container volumes increase by 2 percent from 3.89 million TEU to 3.95 million TEU.

The IPA also reported an increase in box throughput at the Port of Chennai, where volumes grew 3.5 percent from 1.38 million TEU to 1.43 million TEU.

Kolkata Port, the oldest operating port in India, again reported an increase in container traffic, rising from 482,000 TEU to 505,000 TEU in the eleven-month period, according to the IPA.

However, Mumbai Port, formerly known as Bombay Port, saw volumes drop during the period to 54,000 TEU from the 68,000 TEU handled in the corresponding period a year earlier.

Tuticorn, located in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, handled 436,000 TEU, up from 421,000 TEU, while the West Coast Port of Cochin handled 306,000 TEU, compared to 282,000 TEU the previous year.

According to the IPA, the total cargo handled by the country’s major ports was relatively similar to that of the 511 million tonnes experienced the year prior, as a consequence it is thought that a number of ports will fail in achieving their targets for the 2011-12 fiscal year ending March 31st.

The Port of Kandla handled the most cargo during the period, with throughput recorded at 75.4 million tonnes.

Nhava Sheva, officially Jawaharlal Nehru Port, is the largest container port in India.[3] Located south of Mumbai in Maharashtra, the port on the Arabian Sea is accessed via Thane Creek. Its name derives from the names of Nhava and Sheva villages that were situated here.

History

Nhava Sheva is located near Navi Mumbai, on the Konkan mainland across from the island city of Mumbai. Spread over 10 square kilometres (2,500 acres), it was developed to relieve pressure on Mumbai Port.[4] It was inaugurated on 26 May 1989. It is one of the largest ports in the world.[citation needed]

Construction of Nhava Sheva Port was originally planned in 1965. The original plan envisioned the port for use to import food grains, since India then faced a major food shortfall. Following the Green Revolution in India, India gained surplus food grain production capacity, so that the plans for the port shifted focus to container traffic.

Nhava Sheva Port is run by the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust, an autonomous corporation wholly owned by the Government of India. The port was created to relieve pressure on Mumbai Port, then the pre-eminent port of India. It also enabled importers to avoid the octroi tax levied on goods entering Mumbai city by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation since it falls outside the jurisdiction of the municipal corporation.

A ferry service operates between Nhava Sheva and the Gateway of India in Mumbai. The Central Industrial Security Force is responsible for security of the port.

Nhava Sheva is well connected to major highways and rail networks in India. The closest suburban railheads are CBD Belapur and Panvel. The port handles 65% of India's container traffic and has an average berthing period of 37 hours which is very long and inefficient. However, the GTI terminal of the port, that has been leased to a private operator, set national record for berth productivity of 235.92 moves/hour on 25 January 2010 on vessel M.V Ever Racer (WCIX service). The entire operation was performed in just 13 hours and 10 minutes, during which 3295 moves (4136 TEUs) were performed.

The expansion plans for the port include extensive new terminal access points and connecting roads.
