Descripción:Port Metro Vancouver (legally Vancouver Fraser Port Authority)[9] is a non-shareholder, financially self-sufficient corporation, established by the Government of Canada in January 2008, pursuant to the Canada Marine Act, and accountable to the federal Minister of Transport. It is the principal authority for shipping and port-related land and sea use in the Metro Vancouver region. In 2010, it was the largest port by tonnage in Canada and the fourth largest in North America.[10]

History

Prior to merger

Prior to the formation of the new authority, there were three separate port authorities in the Metro Vancouver region: the Port of Vancouver, which was the largest port in Canada; the Fraser River Port Authority; and the North Fraser Port Authority.

Although the ports were financially self-sufficient, the federal legislation governing the authorities generated some inefficiency because the port authorities, legally separate entities, were forced to compete with each other economically for business. This inefficiency came to the attention of the local media in 2006 when it was found that the recently expanded Fraser Surrey Docks, operated by the Fraser River Port Authority in New Westminster, were sitting idle after their principal shipping partner, CP Ships, relocated to the Port of Vancouver, already nearing capacity.[11] Some critics opposed the possible merger as they felt the new authority would not recognize the unique concerns of the Fraser River.[12]

To increase efficiency of the ports of Metro Vancouver, the federal Minister of Transport permitted the three authorities to study the benefits of amalgamating the three authorities in June 2006. The resulting report highlighted several benefits of amalgamation, and on June 16, Transport Canada granted a "certificate of intent to amalgamate port authorities". On December 21, 2007, the government of Canada published a certificate of amalgamation that allowed the three port authorities to merge into one effective January 1, 2008.[13]

Since 2013, VFPA also merged with Canada Place Corporation, which formerly operated Canada Place as a subsidiary of Port of Vancouver.[14]

Vancouver invests in Asian gateway

Port Metro Vancouver (PMV) and Canada's Harper government are investing CAD$106m in infrastructure to open new markets in Asia.

As part of the government of Canada’s commitment to the Beyond the Border Action Plan, an investment of CAD$49.9m is being made by the port in two new marine container examination facilities to meet the anticipated growth in container volume through Deltaport, BC.

Ed Fast, Minister of international trade, said: “I am proud to announce our government's investment which will help increase our exports to new markets by moving goods, services and people in a more effective manner."

"These investments will also facilitate our growing trade and investment ties to fast-growing Asia-Pacific markets and build on our competitive advantages."

The new Roberts Bank facility will be located at the east end of the Deltaport causeway on the Tsawwassen First Nation Industries Lands and is expected to open in the summer of 2015. The other Burrard Inlet facility is scheduled to open in the fall of 2015.

PMV says they will help reduce processing times, resulting in savings for Canadian businesses, while protecting the health, safety and security of Canadians.

"Once operational, the facility will reduce travel time and related emissions by a factor of 10 and, since the facility is located on TFN lands, it is anticipated that there will be both construction and full-time employment opportunities available to TFN members,” added Robin Silvester, president and CEO, Port Metro Vancouver.

El Puerto de Vancouver esta situado al suroeste de Canadá, su posición geográfica estratégica en el océano pacifico, y las montañas del suroeste, propician un clima adecuado durante todo el año para el movimiento de carga al mercado internacional.

Adicional a la red ferroviaria, el Puerto de Vancouver cuenta con redes carreteras y aéreas, en este ultimo, el aeropuerto internacional se encuentra situado a 25 minutos del puerto, lo que representa todo un sistema intermodal de transporte que da respuesta al flujo de mercancías y pasajeros de la industria internacional de cruceros.

El puerto es competitivo y de clase mundial con moderna infraestructura y fuerza laboral clasificada, entre los que están, astilleros, estibadores, remolques, vías ferroviarias, transporte terrestre, consignatarios de buques, proveedores en general, agentes aduanales, y agencias administrativas, entre otras.

A lo largo del Canadá, el puerto genera mas de 27,500 empleos directos, 18,500 indirectos y otros 62,000 a terceros, además de 1.3 billones en sueldos. Las actividades portuarias generan el 5.25% del total del producto interno bruto del país, así como una derrama económica directa de 3.5 billones. El valor total promedio de la carga que se mueve en el puerto en un año es de 29 billones.

De manera adicional, el puerto de Vancouver maneja el 76% del tonelaje total de carga a granel, entre los productos los comunes están: repollo, granos, carbonato de potasio, carga general como madera, pulpa de madera, acero, comida para mascotas, carne y pescado, petroquímicos y metales.

El Puerto de Vancouver es el mas importante de ese país, ya que maneja aproximadamente el 97% de la mercancía de exportación producida en la Columbia Británica, Alberta, Saskatchewan y Manitoba.

Industria de Cruceros

Vancouver a estado en la industria de cruceros desde 1880 ofreciendo al principio un servicio al oriente, en la actualidad la industria de cruceros entre Canadá y Alaska es de mas de 1 millón de pasajeros al año, ofreciendo uno de los mas atractivos y amplios mercados que existen, por los extraordinarios escenarios naturales, la cercanía de las terminales de cruceros con el aeropuerto, así como los atractivos que la ciudad de Vancouver ofrece, ya que cada año es ubicada alrededor del 5to lugar como la ciudad mas bella en el mundo, ofreciendo actividades pre y post crucero.

Red laboral Estratégica

La clave del éxito del puerto de Vancouver se debe al trabajo en equipo que conforman las terminales y los operadores, ambos invierten en tecnología de punta, y además participan conjuntamente en la resolución de controversias internas para incrementar la eficiencia y productividad operativa.

La autoridad portuaria de Vancouver es parte de múltiples organizaciones, como la Asociación Internacional de Puertos (IAPH), Asociación Americana de Autoridades Portuarias (AAPA), la Asociación Canadiense de Exportadores y Manufactura (CMEA), y la Asociación Canadiense de Autoridades Portuarias, entre otras.
