Puerto de Sídney en venta para sufragar nuevas infraestructuras

Muchos inversores ven los puertos como la forma más atractiva de capitalizar el boom comercial entre Australia y Asia. Así, el año pasado el Gobierno de Queensland firmó un contrato de arrendamiento del Puerto de Brisbane por 99 años con el consorcio Q Port Holdings, reportándole unos ingresos de 2.100 millones de dólares australianos.

Ahora es el Gobierno de Nueva Gales del Sur quien planea privatizar sus activos de Port Botany, en Sídney. Estima conseguir entre 1.800 y 2.200 millones de dólares australianos con los que financiar varios proyectos que han sido catalogados como prioridades en el programa de infraestructuras Restart NSW. Entre éstos destacan las obras de mejora de las autopistas Pacific y Princes, así como diversas líneas ferroviarias.

Según Russell Smith, director ejecutivo de Q Port Holdings, Port Botany se beneficiaría de las oportunidades y la mayor eficiencia que el sector privado ofrece. El puerto, que procesó dos millones de contenedores de 20 pies durante el último año, afronta actualmente problemas sistémicos tales como una falta de infraestructura adecuada para un interrumpido movimiento de contenedores y una continua congestión del tráfico ferroviario y de camiones.

Contra el plan se ha pronunciado la industria de transporte marítimo, que se muestra preocupada ante la privatización de Port Botany. Shipping Australia afirma que en manos privadas se favorecería la maximización de beneficios por encima del desarrollo de las instalaciones portuarias. Además, debido a las grandes distancias existentes entre uno y otro, los puertos australianos no compiten entre ellos, por lo que un operador privado podría fácilmente incrementar los precios gracias a su poder en el mercado.

HPH wins Botany deal

Hutchison Port Holdings (HPH) has expanded its footprint in Australia by signing a deal with Sydney Ports Corporation (SPC) to develop and operate the third container terminal (T3) at Port Botany.

Hong Kong-based HPH beat off competition from incumbent operators Patrick and DP World, as well as the ICTSI-backed Anglo Ports consortium, to win the 30 year concession - the 50th port in its worldwide network and the second in Australia after Berths 11 and 12 at Fisherman Islands in Brisbane. The latter are due to start operations in 2012 and 2014 respectively.

Sydney International Container Terminals (SCTL), a wholly owned subsidiary of HPH, has been established to operate T3, which is scheduled to enter into service in 2012.

“Australia is a major market for HPH and we are pleased to be part of the New South Wales government’s plan to provide world-class port facilities in the state. Port Botany is New South Wales’s premier port and one of Australia’s major international container ports, handling one third of the country’s container traffic. We are optimistic about the future growth of Port Botany as trade increases between Australia and Asia in line with the recovering world economy,” said John Meredith, group managing director of HPH

Construction of T3, adjacent to the existing Patrick terminal, has already begun. On build-out, it will have five berths along a total quay length of 1,850m and 63 hectares of yard. HPH will operate four of the berths with 1,300m of quayline and 46 hectares of yard area, with the fifth berth and remaining yard area allocated to Patrick.

La bahía de Sídney (en inglés: Sydney Harbour), también llamada Port Jackson, es un puerto natural en torno al cual se sitúa la mayor aglomeración urbana de Australia, Sídney. En los alrededores, se encuentran dos de los más famosos símbolos de la ciudad, la Ópera de Sídney (Sydney Opera House), y el Puente de la bahía de Sídney (Sydney Harbour Bridge), que juntas forman una de las vistas más bonitas y fotografiadas del mundo. Otro puente que atraviesa la bahía es el puente ANZAC. El puerto se extiende unos 19 kilómetros en el mar de Tasmania, al este, hasta las proximidades del suburbio llamado Glebe al Oeste. En este punto, se reduce a dos ríos conocidos como río Parramatta y río "Lane Cove". El Parque Olímpico de Sídney está bañado por el río Parramatta.

La bahía de Sídney incorpora otras innumerables bahías menores tanto al Norte como al Sur, estando las más grandes localizadas al Sur, incluyendo la llamada "Sydney Cove", que baña el área conocida como "Circular Quay", en el corazón del centro de la ciudad. Otras bahías destacables son la "Cockle Bay" (en el famoso "Darling Harbour"), Woolloomooloo Bay, Watsons Bay, Double Bay, e Rose Bay. Un sinnúmero de pequeñas islas existen dentro de la bahía, destacando "Cockatoo Island" (donde se realizan festivales musicales y otros eventos) y el "Fuerte Deninson", que fue una prisión a cielo abierto en el pasado, y hoy es una atracción turística de Sídney.
