Descripción:Kasselburg Castle, situated high up on a cliff top in the Eifel mountains, is un-doubted one of the most impressive castle ruins in Germany.

The eight-story dwelling tower from the mid 14th century is unique. With its original steep roofs it must have made and even more towering impression.

The remaining structural parts of the castle are more decayed, but the upper castle, with its Romanesque castle keep, residential buildings and chapel from the 14th century, does also convey a clear impression of the ambitions of the lords of Blankenheim.

At the end of the 19th century, the Rhenish Railway Company had the great tower restored as an attraction for travelers on the line from Cologne to Trier.

Pelm - Kasselburg Castle

Description and History

Kassleburg Castle was probably built in the 12th century by the Lords of Castel. At least until 1291 the castle was called “Castillburg”. The lineage Blankenheim-Kasselburg or rather Blankenheim-Gerolstein were the owners of the castle. This lineage was well-known in the northern region of the Eifel and they also owned Gerhardstein Castle in Gerolstein. After they linked up with the Counts of Manderscheid they became so powerful that they preserved their independence against the electorates of Trier and Cologne until the French Revolution.

From 1426 on and later from 1611 on the Lords of Mark owned Kasselburg Castle. From 1452 until 1611 it was owned by the electorate Trier. In 1647 an imperial court awarded the castle to the Counts of Arenberg. At that time the castle was already dilapidated.

In the 19th century Kasselburg Castle belonged to Prussia and among the Prussian King Frederick William IV. of Prussia its restoration started. Between 1902 and 1913 the restoration was done by the “Prussian Preservation of ancient Monuments”.

In the years 1976/77 and between 1984 and 1986 the Castles Administration of Rhineland-Palatinate restored Kasselburg Castle again. The focus of this restoration was put on the residential building, on the chapel, on the walls of the castle and on the keep.

At first, visitors are standing in front of the huge double-tower of 37 meters height which was probably built by Gerhard of Blankenheim in 1355. The double-tower symbolizes the former power and the self-confidence of the lineage Blankenheim. The interior of the double-tower has several heated living rooms which are connected by a spiral staircase in the northern tower. In former times there had been an entrance from the first floor of the double-tower to the bailey.

Immediately behind the double-tower there is the inner castle, which was also built in the 14th century. Its Romanesque keep is now integrated into the eastern part of the castle wall, even though it had been standing by itself formerly.

At the southern side of the castle there are the remains of the residential building and at the southwestern side there is the three-storey chapel. Other working and living quarters were located at the outer castle. The outer castle was built by the electorate Trier.
