Este canal situado en Inglaterra es parte del sistema del canal británico. Comienza en Londres y termina en Birmingham. Tiene una longitud de 461 km y es el canal más largo del Reino Unido.

Su origen viene determinado por la competencia que originaron en la segunda mitad del siglo XIX el ferrocarril y las mejoras en las carreteras. Para luchar contra ellos,se creó este canal,que es la fusión del The Regent Canal y el Grand Junction Canal lo que hizo que el transporte por medio del canal volviese a ser competitivo.

Grand Union Canal - Braunston to Birmingham

The Grand Union Canal runs from the Birmingham & Fazeley Canal and the Tame Valley Canal at Salford Junction, and from Digbeth Branch of the Birmingham Canal at Warwick Bar to join the Oxford Canal at Napton Junction and Braunston. The Grand Union Canal continues from Braunston to the tidal Thames at Brentford. The Canal is joined by the Stratford upon Avon Canal at Kingswood Junction. The main line of the canal from Birmingham to Braunston is 43.5 miles (70.0 km) and has 63 locks.

Grand Union Canal Main Line - London to Braunston

The Grand Union Canal runs from the tidal river Thames at Brentford to join the Oxford Canal at Braunston. The Grand Union Canal continues from Braunston to Birmingham. The Canal is joined by the GU Leicester section at Norton Junction. The main line of the canal from Brentford to Braunston is 98.5 miles (158.6 km) and has 70 locks.

There are Arms to:

Aylesbury - 6.3 miles (10.1 km) - 16 locks - joins at Marsworth Junction

Buckingham - 10.7 miles (17.2 km) - 3 locks - joins at Cosgrove Junction - mostly derelict but under restoration

Northampton - 4.8 Miles (7.7 km) - 17 locks - joins at Gayton Junction

Paddington - 13.6 miles (21.9 km) long - no locks - joins at Bulls Bridge Junction

Rickmansworth (former) Gas Works (River Chess Branch) - 0.3 miles (0.5 km) - 1 lock - joins at Batchworth Junction

Slough - 4.9 miles (7.9 km) long - no locks - joins at Cowley Peachey Junction

Wendover (under restoration, partly navigable) - 6.5 miles (10.5 km) long - 1 stop lock - joins at Bulbourne Junction

The River Nene joins the Northampton Arm in Northampton. The Regent's Canal joins the Paddintgon Arm at Little Venice.

The Aylesbury, Buckingham, Northampton, Slough and Wendover Arms are narrow and have smaller dimensions.

The locks south of Bulls Bridge Junction require a Sanitary Station key for operation.

Locks 49 (Northchurch) to 51 (Gas Lock 1) are locked and unavailable between 9pm and 8am daily.

Lock 53 and Bridge 147 (Winkwell Swing Bridge) require a Sanitary Station key to operate.

Locks 7,9, 10, 11 and 15 on the Aylesbury Arm require a Sanitary Station key to operate.

El Grand Union Canal de Inglaterra forma parte del sistema de vías navegables del Reino Unido. La línea principal tiene su cabecera en Londres y termina en Birmingham en un recorrido de 220 km y 166 esclusas. La línea incluye varias intersecciones con otros canales entre los que se incluyen Leicester, Slough, Aylesbury, Wendover y Northampton.

Tiempo atrás, el ramal de Leicester recibió también el nombre de Grand Union, actualmente y para evitar confusiones pasó a ser conocido como Old Grand Union Canal.

Historia

Tras tomar la delantera el servicio ferroviario en la segunda mitad del siglo XIX y las mejoras en carreteras e ingeniería del motor a principios del siglo XX, el sector del transporte empezaba a suponer una amenaza económica para los canales. Para hacer frente a los ferrocarriles, los peajes de las autopistas fueron retirados. En cuanto al sector naviero: los canales Regent y el Grand Junction acordaron modernizar y mejorar sus infraestructuras para mantenerse en la competencia.

Fue inaugurado el 1 de enero de 1929 y prolongada en 1932. El trayecto está formado por varios canales que sirven de ramales y tienen una extensión total de 461 km siendo el más extenso de Reino Unido.
