Descripción:Ranger's House, The Wernher Collection

Ranger's House is a beautifully elegant Georgian villa, located in Blackheath, south-east London, by Greenwich Park. Ranger's House houses The Wernher Collection, a sumptuous art collection, collated by the Victorian-era diamond magnate, Sir Julius Wernher.

Ranger's House dates back to 1700, when it was originally built by the famous Royal Naval figure, Vice-Admiral Francis Hosier. The house was later inherited by another important British figure, Philip Stanhope, 4th Earl of Chesterfield. The fascinating history of Ranger's House even includes royal patronage, when the villa became the residence of Princess Sophia of Gloucester, the great granddaughter of King George II.

Nowadays, Ranger's House is home to The Wernher Collection, a fabulous collection of approximately 700 pieces acquired by Sir Julius Wernher in the 19th and early-20th centuries, which occupy twelve rooms, and include works by such distinguished names as Sir Joshua Reynolds, Francesco Francia, John Hoppner, Filippino Lippi, George Romney, Gabriel Metsu and Hans Memling.

Ranger's House is governed by English Heritage, who also look after such London attractions as Charles Darwin's Down House, Eltham Palace, Apsley House and Chapter House.

Ranger's House, set into the wall of the south-west side of Greenwich Park, is a red-brick Georgian mansion that was built around 1710 for Admiral Sir Francis Hosier. It became part of the story of Royal Greenwich in 1807 when Augusta, Dowager Duchess of Brunswick, sister of George III, moved there to be near her daughter Caroline, Princess of Wales and the estranged wife of the future George IV. Caroline held the Rangership of Greenwich Park and lived next door in Montague House.

After the Duchess’s death in 1813, Ranger's House was bought by the Crown and it became the official residence of the Rangers of Greenwich Park. In the same year Princess Sophia Matilda, daughter of the Duke of Gloucester, was appointed Ranger and Ranger's House was modified to make it suitable for a princess. Sophia was very popular with the Greenwich townspeople and noted as "a kind and liberal benefactor to the poor of the town".

From 1862 to 1873 the house was the residence of Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught and third son of Queen Victoria, while he studied at the Royal Military Academy at Woolwich and did his military service in Canada.

The house is now in the care of English Heritage and is open to the public.
